At all times

Maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher, and obtain grades of B or better in the four core/breadth courses
Else, risk academic warning / probation / dismissal

If planning to go on Leave-of-Absence in a semester

(Domestic students ONLY – International students are not eligible for LOA)

Submit LOA request to GPD
Register for CMSC 999 BEFORE final course ADD date (usually 10 days after classes start)

In your first two semesters (full time); first three semesters (part time)

Get to know faculty in your area(s) of interest, and find a research advisor

By the end of your 2nd semester [or in the semester when 15 credits have been completed, for part-time students] (April 15 or Nov. 15)

File the change of advisor form to officially identify your permanent research advisor

By the end of your 2nd semester [or in the semester when 15 credits have been completed, for part-time students] (April 15 or Nov. 15)

File the CSEE Program of Study form (available from CSEE website)

Prior to taking a non-CMSC course for degree

Submit request for approval of non-CMSC course credits (at most 6 credits) to GPD for approval

In the semester that you expect to complete your project or thesis (by Jan 31, June 30 or Sep 30)

Submit a one-page research abstract

Prior to submitting Fulfillment of Course Requirements form

Obtain Graduate Committee and Graduate School approval for non-UMBC course transfers and non-CMSC course credit approvals

In the semester you intend to graduate (2nd week of Feb, June 10 or Oct) - check Graduate School website for dates

File the Graduate School Fulfillment of Course Requirements of Master's Degree form
File the Graduate School Application for Diploma (a fee will be charged to your student account)

Register for at least one credit

At least two months prior to thesis defense (if thesis option)

File the Graduate School Nomination of Members for the Final Master's Examination Committee form

At least 1 month before defending your thesis (if thesis option)

Circulate a thesis proposal to your committee

At least two weeks prior to submitting Scholarly Paper to CSEE Dept.(if non-thesis option)

Circulate report to advisor and reader

Two weeks prior to thesis defense (if thesis option)

File the Graduate School Certification of Completion of Master's Thesis form

At least 2 days prior to thesis defense (if thesis option)

Announce your thesis defense on csee-grad and csee-faculty mailing lists

By last day that Graduate School will accept final thesis

Submit Final Formatted Thesis (thesis option);
Submit Scholarly Report to CSEE Department, signed by advisor and reader

Submit Grad. School's Certification of Completion of M.S. degree Requirements form

Attend Commencement, if possible
